CRICUT: A Gypsy update is available!

News just in..... PC have added some of the new cartridges to the Gypsy!

We are aware that Elegant Embellishments and Seasonal Soirees are not in this update as well as some of the more recent ones. We hope to have another update available sometime soon. Also, we have noticed that some of the cartridges are not showing up in alphabetical order so they might be a little harder to find. O"

In case you've forgotten how to do the update.... Power on your Gypsy, connect it to your Computer and open up Cricut Sync. It will check for updates then tell you that the Digital content rights have been updated.

Click OK to proceed

It's best to un-check the Imagine Application/Content options. You can do those later if necessary.

Click Update Now. The Install file and Data File will be downloaded. (Mine took about two minutes).

Then the updates will be uploaded. (About another 30 seconds)

The content will be installed. (About 1:15 min)

When the update is complete your content version will be 0281

CRICUT: The Gypsy uplink feature is working again!

Huge news everyone!

The Gypsy uplink feature in Cricut Craft Room appears to be working again!

That means that you can again link all the carts that are on your Gypsy to your Cricut.com account so you can use them in Cricut Craft Room and Design Space!

All you have to do is connect your Gypsy to your computer, open Cricut Craft Room and select the Options menu then Link Gypsy.

In just minutes all your cartridges will be linked to your account!

A big thank you to Pamela "Smoochie Grandma" King for the tip off!  So glad she decided to try it and it worked. And she went to the trouble of sharing the news in my Facebook group! � �

CRICUT: Tri-fold Shutter card cut file

Hi everyone,

Today I have a tri-fold shutter card cut file to share with you. But not just any old tri-fold!

I've used a template shared by Sandy Allnock. Many of you will know Sandy as the founder of Operation Write Home. If you're familiar with her blog you may have even seen the card below!

Sandy took the regular tri-fold shutter card and adapted it to make more room for writing a message. I love this version!

They are so easy to put together and so much fun to decorate! Thanks Sandy for allowing me to use your design for my cut file.

As I mentioned in a previous post, this will be the last file I share in the Gypsy format.

Cutting instructions:

Please note, my version is just under 11.5" wide. (Sandy's is 12" wide.)  That's because the Cricut can't cut any wider than 11.5" when using the standard 12" mat. 

When cutting the file in Design Space, just make sure you have the scoring tool in the A tool holder. The scoring will be done first then the cutting.

When cutting the file in CCR or from the Gypsy always do the scoring layer first. (The tabs are named appropriately.)

The easiest way to score is to use your regular blade. Turn the depth down to 3 and pressure to minimum. If you are using CCR select Vinyl or light cardstock as the type of material being cut.

When the scoring layer has been done return the blade depth/pressure/material to its usual setting then do the cutting layer.

Box Card file - now available for CCR and Gypsy

I've finally had a chance to make the CCR version of my Box Card file! I've also converted it to a Gypsy file, but haven't done a test cut for it.

The file is made completely with shapes from the Cricut Craft Room Basics cartridge, which means anyone can cut it provided they use Cricut Craft Room or a Gypsy.

And you can even open the Gypsy file in the old Design Studio program (not Design Space) and cut it from there too!

So how do you get the files? Easy...

To open the file in CCR please remember that you have to import it! 

• Once you have saved the file to your computer, open CCR and click on My Projects.
• Click the Import button
• Locate the file on your computer and click Open.
• Click on the new file in your My Projects folder and click Open.

When you open the file you will see that there are eight tabs. All but the first two have been hidden.

The first two tabs contain the score layer and cutting layer for the box base.

If you need to move the base to a different position on the mat make sure you also select the score layer. Otherwise the score lines won't be in their correct positions. The same applies to the inserts.

I have separated the four slot inserts and three slot inserts onto their own score and cut layers. (4 Z Score & Cut and 3 Z Score & Cut.)  As for the base, if you move the insert around make sure you move the score layer at the same time.

It's a good idea to hide any layers that you're not currently using. That way you won't accidentally move anything you don't mean to move! Just click on the "eye" on the layer tab to hide or show a layer.

Always do the score layer first. The easiest way to score is to turn your blade depth to 3, the blade pressure to min and select Vinyl from the materials list at the Cut screen in CCR.

Once you have done the score layer, change your blade depth and pressure back to where you usually have them set for your cardstock and select the correct thickness of paper from the materials list. 

You'll also find layers for the outside panels and flaps/inside panel.

CRICUT: Tissue box cover - Free cutting file

Hi everyone!

Today I have another Cricut cutting file to share with you. (Three actually....)

It's a cover for the square tissue boxes. Here's my sample box.

I cut this one using CCR as I haven't received my Explore yet. But it's on its way!! I can't wait till it arrives and I'm so glad I have some willing and able beta testers to test out my Design Space files for me! �

Cricut Lovers Guide to Design Space

We have free files to share with you every week!

I have had three people let me know that when they open the Design Space file the side panels layer (the red layer) appears then disappears. I've opened the file on several different computers at home and haven't had the problem. I'm pretty sure the problem is a Design Space bug.

If the same thing happens to you, you can either cut the side panels by hand... or add them to the file yourself using the square from Cricut Craft Room Basics. Either way, here are the measurements you'll need:

Side panels - 4 each of 4.25" x 4"
Lid panels - 4 each of 4.25" x 0.75"

To save you searching...the image code for the CCR square is #M3CF50. Make sure you have All Images or My Images selected before putting the code in the Insert Image search box.

So, some CCR instructions...

When you open the file in CCR your screen should look like this:

Depending on how much you've zoomed your mat in or out, you'll see less or more tabs than I have showing above. Just use the left and right arrows next to the layer tabs to see the other mats.

The file is made up of seven mats. From left to right the mats are in the order in which you should cut them: Base score, Base cut, Lid Score, Lid cut. You can cut the Lid Layer, Base layer and Lid sides in any order as there are no score lines on them.

If you are planning on hand scoring then you won't need to "cut" the Base score or Lid score layers.

I have the Cricut score tool but it does such a lousy job of scoring I don't use it. Instead I use the regular blade by changing the blade depth and the pressure settings. I cut mine using the Expression. For that machine I used the following settings for scoring:

Blade depth: 3
Pressure: Min
Material: Light cardstock (set at the Cut preview screen in CCR)

This cuts just deep enough to make an indentation on the cardstock without cutting all the way through. I'm using quite thick cardstock, so if you're using a thinner cardstock for your base make sure you do some experimentation of your own first!

• Make sure that after you have done a scored layer you change your blade depth and pressure and material back so your next layer will cut correctly.

• Also, don't unload your mat after you have done the scored layer. Just change your settings then cut the next layer.

• If you move the base or lid around on the mat, make sure you also select the scoring layer and move it at the same time. The score lines are positioned in the correct spot on the cutting layer. 

Design Space instructions

If you're using the Explore score tool then just load your mat and let the Explore do its thing!

Assembly is very easy. 

On the two Base pieces, fold along all the score lines, then overlap and adhere one of the 1/2" pieces (C) to the end of the first piece (B).  Then overlap the remaining 1/2" piece (A) to the end of (D) to form the box.

For the lid, fold along all the score lines then adhere the tabs on the four corned inside the lid.

The remaining pieces just attach to the outside and top of the box.

You can just slip the lid over the box... or for a neater finish with no gaps adhere it with your choice of adhesive.

CRICUT: Let's talk about linking

There is so much confusion around about linking Cricut cartridges. The same questions keep being asked on the Official Cricut Facebook page.  So I thought I'd try and make some sense of it for anyone still wondering...

There are three ways we can link our cartridges to our Cricut account:

• To a Gypsy
  
  
• Through Cricut Craft Room (CCR)
  
  
• Through Cricut Design Space 

You only have to link your cartridges using one of the above methods. If you link via Cricut Craft Room or Design Space those carts will automatically be available in both programs. 

If, however, you link your cartridges using a Gypsy there is an extra step you need to do to make them available in Cricut Craft Room and Cricut Design Space.

This step can only be done using Cricut Craft Room.

If you've never used Cricut Craft Room here is the link to download it. (Click the image below.)

If you have Windows 8.1 make sure you click that download option when you get to the download page. The "Download for PC" is for operating systems prior to Windows 8.1 (including Windows 8.0)

Once you have CCR installed.....

• Connect your Gypsy to your computer with the USB cable

• Open Cricut Craft Room

• Click on the Options Menu and select Link Gypsy

You will see this message box

• Power on your Gypsy

Once the Gypsy is detected the message box will change to this. (Your Gypsy's serial number will show.)

You have two choices at this point.

• If you want to upload the cartridges from your Gypsy so they are available in Cricut Craft Room and Design Space click the Uplink button.

• If you want to download the cartridges that are linked to your cricut.com account so they are available on your Gypsy press the Sync button.

If you need to do both (because you have some carts linked to your Gypsy and some to your cricut.com account) it doesn't matter which order you do them in.

Once everything is up to date, it's easier to select one method of linking any future cartridges (Gypsy vs CCR vs CDS). You'll then only have to do one of the above syncing methods instead of both.

Remember... linking is permanent! Once a cartridge is linked to your account (regardless of which method you chose) it cannot be unlinked or linked to another account. 

CRICUT: Gypsy Linking

PC have advised that the Gypsy Linking process in Cricut Craft Room is currently not working.

They are working on fixing the problem but have not advised how long that might take.

If/When they post that it's fixed I'll update here.

CRICUT - CCR - Importing Design Studio and Gypsy files into CCR

Do you have a lot of Design Studio and/or Gypsy files that you would like to use in CCR? Well, here's how you go about importing them.

1. Importing Gypsy files into CCR

(This is for files that you or someone else have created using the Gypsy.)

• Make sure CCR is not running. (You'll get a debug error message if you have CCR running and will have to select Abort then close CCR.)
• Connect your Gypsy to your computer with the Gypsy USB cord
• Power on the Gypsy
• Open Cricut Sync

• When your Gypsy has connected and has checked for updates click the OK button. (If your Gypsy hasn't been updated for a while you may want to do the updates first although you should be able to skip that process and proceed with the file transfer.)

 

You will see a list of the files on your Gypsy

Next you need to transfer your Gypsy file to your computer. 

• Open Windows Explorer and select a location for your file 

The default location for Cricut files is C:/Documents/Cricut/Projects but you can select any location on your computer, even the Desktop. I'll be using the default Projects folder.

• Click the middle right hand button at the top right of the Windows Explorer screen to make that window smaller

Next, position the Windows Explorer and the Cricut Sync windows so you can see both on the screen

• Scroll through the list on the Cricut Sync window and locate the file you want to transfer to your computer

• Highlight the file you want to transfer then click and drag it over to the Windows Explorer screen.

You should see a symbol a bit like this as you move your cursor over the Windows Explorer screen.

• When you have your mouse positioned over the Explorer window release the mouse button. Your Gypsy file will be copied to your computer and will show up in the list of files.

• Check and make sure the file size isn't 0KB. If it does appear as 0KB the file won't import into CCR. If that's the case repeat the process above

2. Now you need to import your file into CCR.

• Exit out of Cricut Sync
• Disconnect your Gypsy from your computer (or power it off)
• Open CCR and login to your account
• When you are at the Projects screen click the Import button

• Navigate to the folder you copied your Gypsy file to

• Click the file and press Open

The file will appear at the top of your Projects list

• Single click the file to select it and press the Open button (or double click next to the file name)

The file will appear on your CCR mat.

You will notice that the orientation of the file is different to how it appeared on your Gypsy. That's because the mat arrow on the Gypsy is on the left

Whereas the mat arrow on the CCR mat is at the top.

You can either leave your objects as they are or you can use the Rotate feature in the Shape Properties menu and rotate your objects 270�. 

In the design above I would change my mat size to 12x12 before rotating the objects then change it back to 6x12 if I'm cutting it out on the Personal or the Create.

• To change the mat size select the Options Menu
• From the Project tab change the default machine to the Expression 
• Change the Mat size to 12x12

You may also find that your objects will be grouped. 

• To make any changes to individual objects select the group by clicking anywhere on one of the objects then click the Ungroup button on the toolbar.

That's it for importing Gypsy files. Now onto Design Studio files.

3. Importing Design Studio files into CCR

Currently, if you have the full version of Design Studio you can save your DS files as Gypsy files. If you haven't done that before here's how you go about it:

• With your file open in DS select File, Save As

• Highlight and delete everything inside the File name box

• Type in a new file name. (It can be the same as the Gypsy file or something different)

• Click on the Save as type box

• Select Gypsy files (*.gypsy)
• Click the Save button

• Select File, Close. (You can leave DS open if you want. Just make sure the file is closed.)

• Once you have your DS file saved as a Gypsy file follow the instructions above to import the file into CCR.
