CRICUT: Slicing large images in Design Space

Ever wanted to cut something larger than the 12" x 12" or 12" x 24" mat?

Well, here's how you do it using Cricut Design Space. I'm using a tree image from the Zoobaloo� cartridge.

Insert your image on to the canvas and resize it to the height or width you want your finished project to be. I'm setting the height of this tree to 50 inches.

Click on the zoom icon at the bottom of the canvas and zoom out until you can see most of your image. I've zoomed out to 50%.
Move the image so it's away from the top and left margins of the canvas.

Click the Insert Shapes button and add a square to your canvas

From the Edit panel change the size of the square to 11.5" x 11.5"

Select the square and click Duplicate from the bottom of the Layers panel. I make about 10 duplicates then add more if needed.

Move one of the squares over part of the tree.

Select the square and the tree (you might find like I did that the entire tree doesn't look like it's selected... but it is.)
Click Slice from the Layers panel

Move the sliced sections to the side.

You can delete the extra pieces if you wish and just leave the sliced section that you need. In this example I keep the green pieces and delete everything else.

It's a good idea to have a duplicate of your original shape to use as a guide when assembling the sliced pieces. Sometimes I keep the sliced squares on the canvas and use those as a guide.

Note: When slicing Design Space now creates a duplicate of the sliced piece. This is to retain the colour of the original shape.

Place another square over another section of the tree, select it and the tree and again click Slice.

As before, move the slices pieces to the side and delete all but the piece you need.

Continue slicing sections of the tree. You can make the square smaller if it helps with positioning.

Once you've finished slicing the tree delete any remaining squares and extra sliced pieces.

Click Go and your images will be placed on the 12x24 mat ready for you to cut and assemble.

Tip: Do not use Attach or Weld! Doing either will result in this error.

Using 3rd party programs to convert SVG's for use with Cricut Design Space

There are many SVG's available for use with Design Space. But some import into Design Space better than others. That's dependent on which design program was used to create those SVG's.

Some SVG's will import just as a black box. Some will open as a blank box with a broken link at the top. And some will open with all the layers on top of each other. (See examples below.)

When this SVG is inserted onto the DS canvas this is what it looks like. Not ideal!

There's a very simple way to fix these files though if you have a 3rd party program such as Sure Cuts A Lot version 4, Make the Cut, Craft Artist 2 or even Inkscape.

I've found that SCAL4 is the quickest program to use to do this. But it is a program you have to purchase at a cost of around $60.

Make the Cut ($60) and Craft Artist 2 (�21 - approx $32 depending on exchange rate) are also programs you can purchase. These also do the required job but will give you an extra step to do once the file is imported into Design Space.

Inkscape is of course free! It can also be used but does require extra steps both within Inkscape and once you import into Design Space.

First I'm going to show you how to convert a file in SCAL4. I'm using the Accordion Christmas Pudding card from Tina's Cutting Files Studio as an example. The images above show how this file imports in Design Space before being converted in SCAL.

(I'll also be showing you how to do the same process using the other three programs above.)

Sure Cuts A Lot 4

Open SCAL and click the Import SVG button.

Select the file you want to import and click Open.

The design will show on your screen.

You can click the x on any of the properties boxes to get them out of the way.

And you can also zoom your screen out so you can see the entire design.

You can see that the file has imported very differently to how it did in Design Space. All the shapes are where they are supposed to be!

Next, click on the File menu and select Export

Give your file a new name (I generally just type SCAL at the end of the existing file name) and click Save.

The Export Options box will appear. In this box you must check the "Design Space compatible" box.

Leave the Resolution at 72 DPI but the other two options don't matter. Checked or unchecked makes no difference for what we're doing.

Click the OK button. You won't get a message saying that it's saved. You'll just be returned to the main SCAL design screen.

Now it's ready to import into Cricut Design Space.

Inkscape instructions:

Open Inkscape and select File, Import

Select the file and click Open

The file when it imports into Design Space will be huge! Therefore you should take not of the width or height measurements shown in Inkscape.

Click the down arrow next to the height measurement and change to inches then write down either the width or height. Either will do. When you import the file into Design Space you'll use that measurement in the Edit box.

Design Space Tip: Make sure zoom is at 100% when you resize in Design Space otherwise the size won't be correct or in proportion.

Select File, Document Properties

Click Resize page to content

Click Resize page to drawing or selection

So that you can better see the images select View, Display Mode, Outline

With the images selected click Object, Ungroup. (Or Ctrl + Shift G)

Now drag your mouse around individual images and select Object, Group (or Ctrl G)

Repeat for each individual image. You can group the berries and leaves together. You can also group the three small rectangles together.

Be careful not to move any of the shapes outside the bounding box. Just click Edit, Undo (Ctrl Z) if you do.

Once you have grouped each individual piece drag your mouse around the entire set of images (or Edit, Select All/Ctrl A) and select Edit, Group. (Ctrl G)

Select File, Save As and save the file as a SVG. I just add Inkscape to the end of the original file name. You can select Inkscape SVG or Plain SVG. Either will work.

Now you're ready to import the SVG into Design Space. For info on how to use the file in DS please see this post: (There's a little more work you need to do in DS before cutting.)

Accordion Christmas Pudding card and tutorial

Here's a really pretty card I put together using a SVG from Tina's Cutting Files Studio.

This card can be made up of as many panels as you wish just by cutting extra panels and adhering them together.

Here's some instructions on how to use this SVG in Cricut Design Space.

First you'll need to follow the instructions on converting the SVG to make it Design Space compatible. http://www.thenoncraftycrafter.com/2015/11/using-3rd-party-programs-to-convert.html

The following method works if you have converted the file using Sure Cuts A Lot 4. There are extra steps if you use Make the Cut, Craft Artist 2 or Inkscape.
Those instructions will be added to the end of this tutorial soon!

Now that you have converted the SVG it's ready to import into DS.

Open Design Space, sign in and click Upload Images from the left side toolbar.

Click the Upload Image button

Click Browse

Locate your newly saved file and click Open

The SVG image will appear in the preview window.

Click Save

It will now appear in your Uploaded Images Library.

Click on the image then select Insert Images

If it's a large file with many pieces (like this one) you may see this image.

The SVG will open on your screen. If it opens too large to see the whole design you can click the zoom out button.

Before cutting the file make sure you've attached everything. Otherwise all the individual lines including the score lines will be placed on their own cutting mat as shown below.

Select the entire image and click Ungroup from the bottom of the Layers panel.

If you don't, the file may end up too big to fit on the mat and you'll get this error message.

Drag your mouse around individual shapes that have more than one line and click Attach.

Click Attach from the top of the Layers panel.

(That piece alone is made up of 10 individual lines. So you must select all of them before you attach.)

This image shows that there's multiple layers (lines) in the image.

Repeat for each of the other shapes.

Some of the shapes don't require attaching. For example this shape is only made up of one layer as indicated in the Layers panel.

In this svg there's some stray very small dots that I delete. I don't know where they belong but their absence doesn't affect the file so I get rid of them. (I've circled them below.)

Click the Go button and check that everything is correctly attached.

There's no stray lines anywhere but for some reason one layer has been placed on top of another in the preview but that will be fixed later.

Before cutting this file you need to decide how many panels you want in your card. In my example I have used 4 panels. Some images I will need to duplicate and some images I will delete so they're not cut.

I won't be needing the two single panels so I can delete those.

Before duplicating any of the images we'll change our colour scheme.

Currently all the shapes are the same colour. To put each layer on its own cutting mat we need to change the colour of the individual shapes.

I selected Cocoa for the filigree piece.
