FREE: Sideways Box card cutting file

Hi crafters!

Today I'm sharing with you a FREE card base called a Sideways Box Card.

One of my friends Sharon (Skippy's Place) saw this card style on a CTMH blog called Scrappy Matters.

Sharon told me I had to create a cutting file for the Explore so she could make one without having to measure anything! So I did what I was told and here's the result. (Link to the cutting file is at the end of this post.)

The "Just Because" image is from the Paper Lace cartridge. Image number #M46F66. This beautiful image is included in the Cricut Image subscription. This image is not included in the cutting file.

Even though this is a Sideways Box card.... you can also turn it around and use it upright like I did in this example.

         

The finished card measures 5.5" x 4.25" and folds flat to fit into an envelope.

And it has room on the back for writing your message.

Cricut� Cardstock, White - I used the white cardstock for the Print then Cut on the Cuutie KaTootles image. I used the rear feed tray on my printer (Epson WF-7620). It cut beautifully on my Cricut Explore Air using the cardstock setting!  I did trim off the eyelashes though as they were so thin they shredded slightly. 

Patterned paper was from my stash.  One is from a 6x6 bundle called Delightful from Authentique Paper. The other one is from another 6x6 bundle and is still buried under the rubble on my desk!

New version of the Box Card file

I want to thank you all again for following my blog. I have been overwhelmed by the number of people who have requested my Design Space Box Card file.

Today I have made an update to the cut file. This update will allow you to weld other images to the base. (For example you can add a scalloped edge to the flaps.)

The previous version didn't allow this as it used the score line for the base image. Design Space doesn't appear to like welding to that score line.

Rather than send over 400 emails again I have posted the link to the updated file below.

There are a couple of things you will need to do to weld anything to the base.

1. Select the base then right click and select Detach
2. Move the image you want to weld to the base into position on the flap.
3. Click that image and the base image and select Weld. (Use the Shift key to select multiple images.)
4. Repeat for the second flap.
5. Repeat for the third flap.
6. Select all three new images and the base image, right click and select Attach.

Save your work as you go as I received a Shockwave crash error when I was testing the file and had to close my browser and start again!

Box Card - some updates

All emails have gone out for the Box Card file.  If you haven't received it please check your comment on the original blog post. There were some email addresses that bounced and some that didn't leave an email address.  I have replied to your comment if that is the case.

There are a lot of comments on that post now (256 to date) so if you can't find yours make sure you click Load More at the very bottom of the comments section. CRICUT: Box Card cut file error

Hi everyone! And a big old Wow! I've sent the Card Box file to over 130 people!!! Thanks so much for your interest. And a big hello to all my new followers!

I have had a couple of emails reporting that they were getting an error when they were trying to cut the file.

The error stated that "This project isn't available to purchase yet". That confused me because I had only used the free score line image and a box from the free Cricut Craft Room digital cartridge. I did that so that anyone with an Explore could cut the file.

Well, luckily before I had time to really start to panic, Brenda, one of those lovely followers figured it out. It was the font I used in the information box at the top of the design.

Thanks Brenda for saving my sanity!!

If you don't own the font I used (A Childs Year) you will get that error. There's an easy fix though.

1. Go to the Layers box
2. Scroll down till you find the layer that starts with Box C�
3. Click the �eye� to hide that Layer.

The text box will be hidden from the canvas and won't appear as a layer when you click Go!

Good luck with the file and I hope you'll post a picture of your finished project using the InLinkz "Add your link" button in the previous post.

Box Card cut file - Did you receive it? Will you post a photo of your Box card?

Thanks for the great response to my Box Card file and welcome to my new followers!

I've sent the file to everyone who has requested it. I've had a few people mention that they haven't received the file, even though it shows up in my email's Sent Items folder.

I was getting some errors yesterday when I was sending out the emails though so let me know in the comment below if you have requested it but haven't yet received it and I'll send it again.

I had one email bounce (TKDMOM) and one comment that didn't leave their email address (JennyD906) but I've noted that under your comment.

I've also had someone report that when she opens the file in Design Space she gets an error saying that it's not available for purchase and won't let her cut it. I don't know why she's getting that error as the file only uses the free score line image and a box from Cricut Craft Room basics that is also free.

I thought maybe it was happening because she wasn't logged in but I just tested that by logging out of Design Space and opening the file and I didn't get the error.

So the mystery continues....

CRICUT: A free Box Card cut file for you

Hi everyone!

I have been working on a Design Space cut file for the very popular Box Card.

I've made it using just the score line and a box from Cricut Craft Room basics. Which means that anyone with an Explore can cut it!

I do have plans to make it into a Cricut Craft Room file for those (like me) that don't have an Explore. It would be so much easier if Cricut Craft room had a score line like Design Space!

I have two versions of the file available. A 4 slot version and a 3 slot version.

The insert in this box card is very different to most box cards.



Paulette (aka Scrapalette) was testing out the file for me (I didn't have an Explore when I created the file) and she sent me a link to a blog post by Deb Valder from http://stampladee.com/ with a new way of creating the insert.

So how do you get the files? Easy...

1. Just click the blue Google Friend Connect "Join this Site" button to become a follower of this blog. (That's the first gadget at the top of the column to the right.)
2. Click the orange box below to download the file

3. Click on the link to open the file in Design Space. Make sure you do a Save As and give it a different name. That way you'll always have the original on hand.

Want some instructions on putting the box together? Well, here you go.....

I designed the box to be 2.5" square and 5.5" tall. At that size you will get two boxes from one sheet of 12" x 12" cardstock.

I cut my decorative panels by hand. The small panels are 2.25" square and the large panels (I also put one on the back of the box) are 2.25" x 5.25".

If you want to make the box smaller (or larger if you're using 12"x24" cardstock) make sure you select both parts of the box before you resize. Otherwise the box and the inserts won't stay in proportion. To select both parts you can drag a selection box around them, or (if it's working) hold down the Shift key and click on each part in turn.

The main part of the box is very easy to assemble. Just fold along the score lines, put adhesive on the tab and adhere inside the box.

Here it is partly decorated.

Next fold the insert. When it's folded it should look like this:

Place adhesive on each of the small panels that will attach to the inside of the box. There will be adhesive on two panels on each side of the insert.

Next fold the insert in half along the score line I have marked in white in the picture below.

Here you can see where the insert will slide into the box.

Remove the adhesive from both sides of the insert and slide it into the box.

Make sure it is flush with the bottom of the box. I designed it so that when it's flush with the bottom it is just slightly shorter than the top of the box. It should fit snugly but still give you a little wiggle room.

Once it's in fully, flatten the box against the inserts.

Then open it one turn and flatten again.

Repeat until you've flattened all four sides.

Open the box up and your inserts should be sitting nice and straight like this:

The three slot version is a little trickier to put together as the insert is slightly smaller. But it's still much easier than the individual inserts that all the other box cards use!
